Looks like the ordnance insignia. It is worn by Master Gunnery Sergeants in the Marine Corps and it is called the bursting bomb.

My 2 cents.

Wonderful thread, thanks to all for posting, especially the ID'd items!

I have an ID'd canteen from 4th Tank Battalion, A Company. Can't post pics yet because I can't figure out how to shrink my photos enough

Anybody see a Kennedy on A Company's muster rolls?

Saw an ID'd/UNIS Carbine pouch on Ebay a few weeks ago...lucky new owner, he was a machine gunner on Iwo!

Just picked up this UNIS m1943 shovel cover. I'll add a better quality photo when it arrives.

Nice find!

Great thread guys, hope we can keep it going. I have quite a few UNIS items but here is my latest. The marine was A/1/21 and was wounded on Iwo Jima. I have been wracking my brain trying to decode what the UNIS marking might mean for the 3rd Marine Division. Anyway, here it is.

Very best, Bill K.

If you didn't see my post from last week, here is the story behind the "CARTER" canteen cover. A 3/25 Marine who fought on Tinian, Saipan, and WIA on Iwo Jima. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/243648-idd-usmc-canteen-cover-iwo-jima/
