Collector5516 Posted April 18, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 18, 2014 I work at a museum here in New York City and a colleague of mine asked that I post photos of this item so we can properly identify and catalog it. We believe it to be from a 19th century USMC cartridge box but perhaps it is from a shako? It measures 3 3/8 x 3 1/4 x 1/2 in. ( 8.6 x 8.3 x 1.3 cm ) Any information would be appreciated! ChuckyD Posted April 18, 2014 Share #2 Posted April 18, 2014 Sir You have a USMC Enlisted black helmet Corps device (commonly referred to by Marines as an Eagle, globe, and anchor or EGA), used from 1892-1904. I have attached the reference from the Marine Website. It's Figure 25 on page 24 (it's on page 39 of the 50 page document). http://www.marines.mil/Portals/59/Publications/THE%20EAGLE,%20GLOBE,%20AND%20ANCHOR%201868-1968%20%20PCN%2019000319900_1.pdf I hope this helps. Respectfully, Chuck
Collector5516 Posted April 19, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted April 19, 2014 Hi Chuck - I don't think this is an EGA for a helmet as it stands over 3 inches tall. Also, definitely not the color of your standard EGA.
Brig Posted April 20, 2014 Share #4 Posted April 20, 2014 Hi Chuck - I don't think this is an EGA for a helmet as it stands over 3 inches tall. Also, definitely not the color of your standard EGA. It was for the spiked dress helmet, a cork helmet shell popular in the Corps and Army of the era http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/9799-1892-usmc-enlisted-spiked-helmet-ega/?hl=%2Busmc+%2Bspiked+%2Bhelmet There are at least a half dozen different variants that were produced in the era, officer and enlisted pieces, I own a couple myself. The all gold was for enlisted men

usmcaviator Posted April 24, 2014 Share #6 Posted April 24, 2014 Its a very nice "P1892 Enlisted Dress Helmet Corps Device". Worn on the white and blue M1881 cushioned cork helmet which was adopted by Marines in 1892. It is a rare version with prong backs. I've seen it called "Type 1" before. "Type 2" being the single post back version. It also exists as an officer device struck in sterling with gold plated continents and anchor; as well as band versions in all sterling or nickle plate. I have all three versions posted on my website www.eagleglobeandanchor.com or at http://www.eagleglobeandanchor.com/My_Collection.html Mike
