kanemono Posted April 15, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 15, 2014 Here is a "spoils of war" that is a little different the the usual souvenir. This is an English Coaching Carbine made by Richard Welford in 1760. The gun was bought in 1938 from an old mansion in Burlington, New Jersey. The family stated that the gun was captured from a Hessian mercenary on Christmas Eve 1776 after Washington's successful Crossing of the Delaware during the Revolutionary War. If true, the carbine was probably stolen by a Hessian during their looting, pillaging and raping spree through New Jersey. I knew the antique dealer who bought the gun for many years and have a signed letter telling the story about the gun's capture. The dealer was told the story about the gun while talking to the family after he had purchased a number of antiques and guns from the house.
