I went to the Vicksburg Civil War show yesterday - I didn't pick up any Civil War relics, but I did find this great German canteen decorated during the occupation period:

That is a great looking piece of souvenir art! I would have bought it too.

I assume this is post-WWII and not WWI?

As soon as I read your title I figured it was going to be related possibly to the 42nd Division and their time in Austria. I have seen several of these but never found one myself. Someone must have been producing them there for the troops. What a great find!

This is a great reminder to look under and inside of canteen covers to see what might be lurking there, even if it seems like nothing is at first glance. If this canteen had a cover on it the artwork may have been missed. Very nice piece!
