Third Herd Posted April 11, 2014 Share #2 Posted April 11, 2014 The diamond shaped patches might be French.
Strac Posted April 11, 2014 Share #3 Posted April 11, 2014 They look French to me as well. Unclear on the age, could be quite old.
coli8344 Posted April 11, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted April 11, 2014 Thank you. That helps me with which direction to take for research. I was looking aimlessly even for a clue.
coli8344 Posted April 12, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted April 12, 2014 Thanks to your help I have it narrowed down to possibly very old French Foreign Legion. Still researching.
Strac Posted April 12, 2014 Share #6 Posted April 12, 2014 FFL? Nice! I don't mean to go too far off topic, but I'm curious about something for future reference. Do you know if those are rank chevrons above the number on the diamond shaped patches?
Johnny Signor Posted April 12, 2014 Share #7 Posted April 12, 2014 Look like WW1 era , just my 2 cents worth
Grant S. Posted April 12, 2014 Share #8 Posted April 12, 2014 According to "Uniforms of the French Foreign Legion" the Legion had green numbers and green piping on their collar patches. So your patches are probably regular army, but what branch I don't know. The shape indicates post-1933. The chevrons are just decoration, that probably shows something similar to branch of service. At this time the French wore rank chevrons on the arm, point up, similar in size and position to US and UK chevrons. By WWII they were back to using diagonal slashes on the forearm. coli8344 Posted April 12, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted April 12, 2014 Hey, I gratefully appreciate any information. I usually only focus on Strategic Air Command items but for some reason this seemed to catch my interest. Thanks everyone for your help.
coli8344 Posted April 13, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted April 13, 2014 I was able to find these two pictures showing a similar insignia on a uniform. Both are wearing them on the collar. The colors are different though.
coli8344 Posted April 13, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted April 13, 2014 Here is the second picture. I may be getting closer to what and may be when these were worn.
