Unknown Item? Brass Fish?

This one has me stumped, anyone have a clue what it is? It is US stamped but I cannot find it referenced anywhere.

Could it have been trench art made from a shell or part of a torpedo and thats the contract stamp left over? The base looks like reworked fins of some sort.

Not trench art, a real thing. I've seen these before, just can't remember right now what it is. It is towed, I think it is an early type of bathothermograph, or something to do with mine sweeping. Wide field I know, but it is a real thing, not something some bored squid made up to pass the time.

Thanks, I was leaning toward something towed like perhaps an acoustic decoy?
