I have a few LPSS/APSS submarine patches.Just wondering what other ones or variations are out there.Below is one of them. These sub's were converted to carry UDT or SEAL teams. The three I have are Vietnam era and transported troops off the coast of Vietnam for Recon missions, rescue downed pilots, POW raids, etc..

This boat has a pretty interesting story. On one of its missions of the coast of Vietnam a fisherman tied his boat to the periscope and was picking up oars that the SEAL's were going to use for their boats. As soon as he saw the SEALS he couldn't get to shore fast enough.I guess the captain couldn't stop laughing.

I have one just like your patch but there is a variation which has eluded me for some time now. One did come up for sale several years ago on eBay but I got outbid as it went for a ridiculous price.

Do you remember what that variation looked like?

The variation I was referring to is the one in the photo I posted above. If you look at the scroll ends, left hand, tail, APSS-282 is in parenthesizes, etc., these two patches are different as well as the backing material.

Made it different times?

No idea but my guess is that the one in the photo I posted is probably an earlier piece which is probably why it is harder to come by.

To be honest those two, yours & mine, are the only ones I have ever seen.Thank you for sharing your patch.

Very nice TUNNY patches

How about one of their successors.......

The Kamfish

USS KAMEHAMEHA (SSBN/SSN-642) commissioned 1965

Converted from a SSBN Ballistic Missile Submarine (Boomer) to an SSN Attack Submarine, she was a dedicated SEAL/Special Warfare dry-dock vessel for ten years (1992 to 2002).

This is a fully embroidered patch I got from the DDS/SRV shop on Ford Island before they moved over to Pearl City. The flash made it look brighter than it actually is.

Congratulations as this variation is a very hard one to come. Here are two variations of the USS Grayback LPSS 574 submarine patch.

. "GRAYBACK"!! Spent a lot of time with GRAYBACK. She was in Subic for about a thousand years! LOL! No really, she was in Subic a long time towards the end of her life. I'm surprised more of her stuff doesn't show up. When you spend as much time in Subic as she did, the shops crank out tons of stuff. I was on the Henry B. Wilson, DDG-7 and we were pretty ragged also. No matter how much they did to GRAYBACK, they would not certify her to dive. To get us out of port to make room for a battle group, we were both sent to Cebu City. We said we were escorting each other so some one would be able to call for help! We both made the trip on the surface, and both made it back to Subic ok. Great port visit too!

Salvage Sailor

Ahoy Steve,

As we well remember, there were sedentary worn out hulls tagged by INSURV in most every Westpac Navsta during this period. They languished at Subic, Sasebo, Yokosuka and elsewhere. At Pearl Harbor, we had the pier tied up to the USS BRYCE CANYON (AD-36) and just aft of her, the USS PREBLE (DDG-46) so they wouldn't settle to the bottom.

For years, they were both commonly known as 'Building 36' and 'Building 46' at Bravo piers.

"We now return to the excellent naval topic underway......"

Since the original photos that started this thread seem to have vanished I'm attaching an identical one which is slightly different from the USS Tunny patches in post 2 and 9.

You are correct in that of all of the APSS or LPSS submarine patches the USS Grayback has the most variations. Pictured are variations in my collection. The lower bottom left patch is Philippines made and the lower bottom right patch might be a copy as the white backing material reminds me of something made in South Korea.

Second larger variation. There are more variations but I can't post them due to infringement issues with the ASMIC Trading Post.
