ADMIN Posted May 26, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 26, 2008 Saw these for auction (Item number: 130225376793). The comment by Ed Burka states: "[These are] experimental USMC chevron for a navy chief hospital aidman used just before wwii but never adopted." I figured I would post them here to see if anyone had any more info or other examples.
craig_pickrall Posted May 26, 2008 Share #2 Posted May 26, 2008 That looks more like an Army style chevron but the Army private purchase (unauthorized but used) specialist chevrons used the caduceus rather than the red cross. I checked Warner's book on USN personnel attached to the USMC and Gleen's book on the USMC and did not see any mention of a chevron like this. I also checked Emerson's book on chevrons and the only Army examples he shows have the caduceus. During this era the USN used the red cross and the army did not. ADMIN Posted May 26, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted May 26, 2008 I've never seen any like this either, which was why I posted it and asked for additional info. I didn't see it anywhere in any books I had. To be honest, my first thought was something like CCC.
DocRick Posted February 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 1, 2010 There is a pic in Osprey's WWI Marine book that shows a corpsman wearing a similar patch, but obviously this is not a WWI "quality" patch. This has gone around (I asked about one) and most feel that it is a CCC patch. Or a complete fake.
Lee Ragan Posted February 3, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 3, 2010 Didn't someone have a three stripe Sergeants chevron like these with a red cross on them on this forum a year or two ago? (Maybe I'm dreaming ...or having another "out-of-mind" experience! ) My take on these are (pick one), a manufacturers error, made for a state guard formation, military school or a complete fake. craig_pickrall Posted February 4, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 4, 2010 Lee, I agree with your conclusions. The only version of this I remember seeing is the s/sgt version. There maybe others but I don't recall them.
warroom1 Posted January 29, 2020 Share #7 Posted January 29, 2020 years later any updates on this patch ID.
hardstripe Posted January 29, 2020 Share #8 Posted January 29, 2020 I believe these are chevrons for a foreign army. Several years ago a dealer at the OVMS show in Wilmington Ohio had several boxes of these. That dealer also had several boxes of Dominican Republic Air force chevrons. My firm belief is that these are NOT US.

patches Posted January 30, 2020 Share #10 Posted January 30, 2020 Yes Lee, here it is, there were two separate topics. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/17683-staff-sgt-stripes-with-red-cross/ http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/57149-kahki-corporal-stripe-with-red-cross-below-it/ And then there was this one in a similar vein. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/151656-ww-ii-type-us-army-khaki-chevron-with-unknown-device/
David Minton Posted February 3, 2020 Share #11 Posted February 3, 2020 I once saw a reference to these as American Red Cross, but don’t know if this is true. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
