The chinstrap is the same as a basic Army Officer's chin chain--gilded brass links, likely leather backed-there was no difference except that the USMC used some pretty cheap gilding. You should be able to find them around $100-150. It looks solid to me--and it's nice to have a Horstmann stamp that isn't 1902--it's a solid bet that most of the 1902 ones were never issued. Very nice helmet body.

As I apparently didn't mention it...I believe the prongs are replacements/resoldered. You can see the old solder under the newer

Thought it might be good to see one of these in an original 1890s image.

 

Attached are two photographs of the helmet itself.  I will add the full photograph to the Spanish American category in just a bit.
