Once in a while an officially named Purple Heart turns up that is not a posthumous award. This is one of them.

Pvt Francis Andrews served as a scout with the 142nd Infantry , 36th Infantry Division ( The T-Patchers ). He was a replacement , arriving in Europe in November 1944 . He endured 2 months of combat until he was wounded and captured on January 29th, 1945. He earned a CIB and a Purple Heart during that time.

He spent the rest of the war in Stalag VA and VIIA until he was liberated .

His Purple Heart is officially large machine engraved , is in the original shipping box , and is accompanied by the original engraving order from the PQMD.

Lastly, 2 postcards sent by Pvt Andrews while he was a POW. His wife must have been relieved when she received these.

Lets not forget the POW's this Memorial Day.

"...returned to military control..."

I can almost see the expression on the face of his wife; overcome with emotion when she read this...

Thank you for posting this Kurt; incredible.

God Bless our POW's.

Thanks Steven, I also find those telegrams to have powerful meaning,

Kurt

Squad leader

In case you'd like to know, Francis Andrews was in L/142 before he was captured.

At that time, the 142nd Inf. was in Bischwiller, France.
