Kman1752 Posted March 19, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2014 Going thru my collection and came across these, who wore them and when? some appear fairly new, others appear older. I think the wider ones are JROTC/ROTC?? Any help appreciated.
gwb123 Posted March 19, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 19, 2014 These all look to be US Army. The wider ones are similar to those worn by the ROTC in the 1970's. I believe the narrower ones were worn with the light green shirt that came out in the 1980's that replaced the Khaki uniforms. I believe they were referred to as slide on rank. They saved you the trouble of trying to line up your pin on insignia and eliminate those pesky little puncture holes.
NGCoastArtillery41 Posted March 19, 2014 Share #3 Posted March 19, 2014 They are still worn today on the Army Service Uniform's white shirt. The SP5 one looks particularly cool. As it is now only NCOs wear the shoulder boards, Specialist and below wear pin on rank on the collar.
firefighter Posted March 19, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 19, 2014 The Specialist 5 rank was phased out in 1985.
atb Posted March 19, 2014 Share #5 Posted March 19, 2014 The Army calls them shoulder marks. Epaulettes and shoulder boards are very different things.
