J.Q.M.D. Posted March 9, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 9, 2014 Greetings everyone, I recently acquired this large sack that is marked "U.S.R.S." There are no other markings on it that I can find. It measures about 27" wide by about 16" tall. I believe it is made out of canvas. I'm pretty sure it's a map case, but I'm not certain. It definitely appears to be pre WWI. I'm leaning more towards Indian Wars period. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

J.Q.M.D. Posted March 10, 2014 Author Share #3 Posted March 10, 2014 That's what I was thinking as well. What are your opinions on era? I'm still leaning towards 1870s. The buckles and rivets are all copper or bronze. Thanks!
jprostak Posted April 2, 2014 Share #4 Posted April 2, 2014 It is a Recruit Clothing Bag. USRS is United States Recruiting Service. A new soldier carried all his clothing from the Recruiting Depot to his first assignment. It would be turned it at his post and returned to the Recruiting Depot by the Post Quartermaster. I'm pretty sure these were a 1900 to WWI item.
