USAF 1950s O2 mask...in a can! (MS 22001)

This is a mint, unissued USAF MS22001 oxygen mask, manufactured in 1954. Essentially an improved A-13a, it was the basic mask used by fighter pilots during the Korean War. WW2 A-14 masks were issued in stout card boxes. By the 50s, things had moved on! The M22001 was supplied in an airtight aluminum canister which had a tamper-proof seal. Contained within the canister was the mask itself, a small packet of accessory parts and a silicone pack which absorbed any moisture. The canister was intended to be re-used.

Two MS 22001s, ten years apart...'54 > '64. The shape has changed slightly and the later version has nylon rather than cotton webbing.

Ian,

Very nice find. Very interesting for me seeing a 6482A version from 1954. I was not pretty sure that this early version of the MS-22001 still was manufactured in 1954. I enclose a copy of an article about A-13, A-13A and MS-22001 both USAF and USN versions. Sorry, it's in french!

  • 3 weeks later...

What a nice box ! You can put cakes or chocolate inside now... ;)

Be careful with the # shape ! As you've posted, on the left = Medium & in the right = Large

Some minor modifications have occured in fact, just as you said. :)
