Sabrejet Posted March 3, 2014 Share #1 Posted March 3, 2014 Whilst watching coverage of the Russian invasion of Crimea on the tv news I took notice of their patrol vehicles. It's actually a GAZ "Tiger". Remind you of anything?

Sabrejet Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted March 3, 2014 Obviously, the basic design of these armoured patrol vehicles has evolved as a consequence of combat experience in both Iraq and Afghanistan...particularly in regard to protection against IEDs. AAF_Collection Posted March 3, 2014 Share #10 Posted March 3, 2014 It's a far cry from Colonel Colin Mitchell, AKA "Mad Mitch" of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders who used basic open top Land Rovers as patrol vehicles in Aden in 1967, because he wanted to show the enemy the Argyll's would not be intimidated!. Sabrejet Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted March 3, 2014 Or the "Snatch" Land Rovers our boys were equipped with in the early phases of the war in Afghanistan?!
AAF_Collection Posted March 3, 2014 Share #12 Posted March 3, 2014 Yes from all accounts "Snatch" were pretty bad, the MOD have been selling them off wholesale recently. Still they provide more protection than a soft skin.
Sabrejet Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted March 3, 2014 There's a major logistical operation underway at the moment to ship British vehicles back to the UK from Afghanistan...presumably the US's vehicles too...as we prepare to pull out. I was driving along the M4 motorway yesterday when a convoy of British Army Oskosh tank-transporters (as below) with sand-painted Mastiff heavy patrol vehicles on board passed by on the other side, obviously fresh from the 'stan and headed to a logistical base in Wiltshire.
