Let's see some photos of celebrities who served in the military wearing their uniforms, or better yet, some of the uniforms themselves in your collections.

 

First up is George Herman "Babe" Ruth, Jr. who, unknown to me until today, enlisted in the New York National Guard in 1924 and served in the 104th Field Artillery Regiment,

 

52nd Field Artillery Brigade, 27th Infantry Division.

Country star Kris Kristofferson achieved the rank of Captain in the Army as a helicopter pilot and Ranger. He received his training at Fort Rucker, Alabama before being deployed to West Germany as part of the 8th Infantry Division. After serving out his tour of duty, Kristofferson was scheduled to become an English Literature professor at West Point, but decided to pursue a career in songwriting instead.

Country singer Willie Nelson served in the Air Force for nine months in 1951 before being discharged for a bad back condition.

Johnny Cash spent 4 years in the Air Force, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant, and becoming a Morse Code intercept operator working in Landsberg, West Germany. He is given credit for intercepting the first radio transmission announcing the news of the death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

George Strait served in the Army from 1971 to 1975 including an assignment in Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division. He performed in an army-sanctioned country band called “Rambling Country.”

Drew Carey enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1980 and served for six years. That is where he developed the habit of wearing a crew cut.

A modern celebrity from the Daily Show and from small parts in movies like The Hangover... Rob Riggle served in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1990 to 2013 including tours in Kosovo, Liberia, and Afghanistan. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

That is "The Babe". His full name was George Herman, Ruth, Jr.

Charles Bronson served in the Army Air Force from 1943-45 and flew on 25 missions over Japan missions and was awarded a Purple Heart s a crewman on a B-29.

Humphrey Bogart enlisted in the U.S. Navy in the spring of 1918. He spent most of his months int he Navy after the Armistice was signed, ferrying troops back from Europe.

Unlike his famous role as an officer commanding a PT Boat during World War II, Ernest Borgnine actually served as a Gunner’s Mate 1st Class US Navy aboard the USS Lamberton (DD-119) in the Pacific Theater during the war.

Paul Newman served in the Navy in World War II as a turret gunner in an Avenger torpedo bomber. As a radioman-gunner, he served aboard the USS Bunker Hill during the Battle of Okinawa, 1945.

Hugh Hefner got his start in publishing while in the U.S. Army. Before Playboy existed, Hefner had a successful career in the military. In 1944, after graduating high school, Hefner enlisted in the Army as an infantry clerk. He frequently contributed cartoons for various military newspapers before he was discharged in 1946.
