SOS 2014 Photos - for those of us not as fortunate...

Recommended Posts

As I said on Saturday with the closing in of the weather and folks popping smoke I missed a few things I wanted to add to my collection but as we all know, he who hesitates.... :-(. Though at SOS miss something here find something over there; I added a nice WWI 23rd Inf Reg Purple Heart group to my collection from a fellow forum member. A fellow who was packing up offered me a great deal on some WWI helmets that I could not pass on. All three had great liners and two were named. Guess when my darling Bride gets home I will have to tell her that they were procreating while she was away next week.

It was a great time and except for some folks lifting some items off of some other folks tables the first day all had a great time.

Regards,

John

After looking at all of the photos, and in keeping with this time of year, I've decided that SOS is truly the "Mardi Gras of Militaria! "

Great work on the photos. I started out on Thursday morning taking pictures of the show, but in about 5 minutes my phone was in my pocket and I was roto tilling riker mounts on tables. Glad someone stuck with it, thanks for posting.

Phillip - Enjoyed meeting you at the show! The hobby needs a lot more of you younger guys with your enthusiasm for history. As I'm sure you noticed a lot of us collectors are " geezers"! We need replacements! Thanks to your mom for the great pictures. And, you couldn't be hooked up with a better mentor than Robert Wilson. I had a great show but being by myself didn't get to see it all. Semper Fi......Bobgee

I'll echo what Bob said, it was nice meeting you Phillip and it's encouraging to see young people getting involved! Thank your mom for me also, she is now the USMF photographer. :)

I had a young man(15-17) look at a large USMC grouping I had on our table, I found that he was very knowledgable as we talked about the group. He thanked me for taking time to chat with him and he left. An hour later he was back with an older gentleman. He told him that this was the group he had seen. The older guy said: "you did good", and then he bought it from me. He was sending the young guy out to hunt and pick for him. The young man was learning and the older gentleman was mentoring. It is so awesome to see this.

Glad the group sold.

I would have been very surprised if it did not.

Good to see you and the other forum members again....and can't wait to do it again next year.

Didn't find much there this year. Talking with a few dealers reminded me that basically Wednesday and Thursday morning you have the dealers themselves, their table helpers and movers, the association life members and workers getting first pick on what's out there before the general membership can come in Thursday afternoon and the public Friday and Saturday. So if you really want first crack at the good stuff connect with a dealer and either work or pay to help get in early. That is pretty much the deal for any show actually. I was told a number of shoplifters were arrested the first day. The day it was only open to members. There was a big storm coming so dealers packed up a little earlier then normal on Saturday to get out before it hit.

I made some great buys right up through Saturday and hated to leave early because of the pending storm. Planned on staying to the very end, but packed up the table Saturday after the show closed and headed north.

Anyway, I've found over the last several years, it pays to stay. As dealers pack up and leave, you would be amazed of the items that have been packed away under the tables until more room is available for them to be put out. Also, as a table holder, many sales are still made as people pay more attention to your items when their not overwhelmed.

Not to mention, great items that were over priced the entire show seem to quickly drop in price near the end, but then I also seen great deals in the beginning that were sold 3 or 4 times in the show and ended up on other dealer tables for 3x what they started out as? For example, I hesitated on a great 29th ID German souvenir bring back helmet priced at $700, by the end of the show it was on it's 3rd table for a mere $2000?

Long story short,,, As a dealer or show goer don't be in a hurry to leave!!

You caught me! On the left.

Had a great time at the show. Picked up three armor uniforms - one of them was named and unresearched. It turned out to belong to a KIA. I'll post more on that later.
