It is a life preserver light, this one was made in Marion, IN by the Delta Electric CO. during WW II.

It takes a "D" cell battery, it is just a constant light, not a strobe. This example with the saftey pin type attachment was made later in WW II, eariler models had a string or chain or cotton cord and a clip. There is a previous thread or two about Delta made products. Some had a red lens.

Breuninger in his "United States Combat Aircrrew Survival Equipment" states that the 761-A marker light had a metal body during WWII but had switched to a plastic body by Korea. Of course, we all know how "cast in stone" equipment dates can be!

P.S. The strobe version of this light is, I believe, modern civilian only. The strobes used by the military (again, according to Breuninger) are a totally different style.

Another P.S.:

 

The AAF lists the same USN-marked light in their "Reference Manual for Personal Equipment Officers".
