That is one amazing group.

It is like he just walked off one of the islands, locked everything up and lost the key. Really incredible for its completeness, and how fresh it all looks. You can almost smell the cordite and salt. Thanks for posting.

There are a few small personal memoirs published by men from the 14th Marines whose experiences would have closely paralleled those of your Marine. Neither were 3rd Battalion, but one was also an FO (which from a quick glance at your docs looks like your man may have been on Iwo?)

Stepping Stones Across the Pacific by Tibor Torok 4/14

My War by Dewey Columbus Pickard Jr. 5/14 (4th 105mm How. Bn.)

Both are available on Amazon and are inexpensive. Torok was in the Marshalls, Marianas, and Iwo, and Pickard made the Marianas and Iwo.

Lot of specific info about what it was like actually being there from men in that specific regiment. There are some other resources as well I would be happy to share. PM me if interested.

Thanks to GMPETE for the book suggestions! Both purchased and now read! A very humbling insight into the Marines daily life on the front line.

I recommend to all with an interest in the combat operations in the Pacific.

Cheers, Graham

A fellow forum member suggested copying the yardlong photo to use the names for future reference. I am struggling to find a company to do this, so have taken some photos of sections and posted here.

Maybe useful for someones research in the future? They have been downsized to load here. Please PM me if larger scale photos are needed.

It is of the officers of the 3rd Bn 14th Marines, 4th Div taken at Camp Pendelton in December 1943.

As MCDUFF was kind enough to post this photograph I thought I would pitch in with some additional info from the 14TH MARINE REGIMENT, Camp Pendleton 1943 yearbook. As MCDUFF stated these are the officers of 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines, in late 1943. The men identified are listed below by battery, not the order in which they appear in the photograph:

Headquarters and Service Battery,, 3rd Bn., 14th MARINES

Robert E. MacFarlane, Lieutenant Colonel, Commanding
Harvey A. Feehan, Major
Donald M. Love, Jr., Major
Roland L. Belladonna, First Lieutenant
Edward N. Carpenter, First Lieutenant
Theodore Y. Davis, First Lieutenant
Richard Donovan, Jr., First Lieutenant
Casey L. Fredericks, First Lieutenant
William T. Jacobs, First Lieutenant
David F. Lawless, First Lieutenant
Calvin C. Watters, Second Lieutenant
Bernard J. Diggs, Second Lieutenant
CECIL E. HINKEL, Second Lieutenant
John T. Howe, Jr. Second Lieutenant
Onofrio J. Marrello, Second Lieutenant
Cecil O. Seal, Warrant Officer
Irad B. Hardy, Lieutenant USNR

Battery G, 3rd Bn. 14th MARINES

Edwinn Niven, Jr., Captain, Commanding
Harold C. Montgomery, First Lieutenant
William N, Brown, First Lieutenant
Edward E. Davis, First Lieutenant
Elmer E. Morgan, Second Lieutenant
William M. Swoboda, Second Lieutenant
Peter R. Arnow, Warrant Ofiicer

Battery H, 3rd Bn. 14th MARINES

Guido A. Marengo, Captain
Thomas V. Lafevre, First Lieutenant
Lynn D. Fergerson, First Lieutenant
Robert J. Bladergroen, First Lieutenant
William W. Kaenzig, First Lieutenant
Marvin F. Turnipseed, Jr., First Lieutenant
Larry R. Gale, Second Lieutenant

Battery I, 3rd Bn. 14th MARINES

Earl F. Zeigler, Captain Commanding
Edward E. Jones, Jr., First Lieutenant
John L. Getz, First Lieutenant
Byard E. Sooy, Jr., First Lieutenant
Leonard Wollman, First Lieutenant (not pictured)
Vernon E. Shapiro, Second Lieutenant
Joseph E. Shytle, Second Lieutenant

The following identified in the photograph, but not listed with the Battalion officers in the yearbook:

J. V. Fasalo
B. H. Elliots

C. B. Durst

This Roster is how the unit shipped out (with a few changes no doubt) for the Marshall Islands operation. After the Marshall Islands a new 5th Battalion was created and temporarily attached to the 14th Marines. Quite a few of these officers were reassigned to this 5th 105mm Howitzer Battalion where they would serve through the campaigns for Saipan, Tinian, and as the 4th 155mm Howitzer Battalion on Iwo Jima.

I have FINALLY been able to find a copy of the 14th Marine Regiment Unit History at Camp Pendleton 1943! A wealth of information and goes sweetly with the grouping! Happy!
