carthage light guard Posted February 13, 2014 #1 Posted February 13, 2014 I am editing the memoirs of a WWI U.S. machine gun company commander. His unit was armed with the M1914 Hotchkiss MG. In his memoirs, he refers to the devices used with the guns, including the clinometer. I need to include at least one endnote about the tools that were used to aim/sight this weapon. Does anyone have access to the appropriate U.S. manual for the Hotchkiss, who could provide copies of the pages that cover this topic? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jeff Patrick
dalbert Posted February 14, 2014 #2 Posted February 14, 2014 Jeff, One of the U.S. manuals you seek is as follows: Manual Designation Manual Title Date of Issue Document No. 231 Regulations for Machine Gun Companies Equipped with Hotchkiss Machine Guns, Model 1914 on Tripod Mounts Model 1913, Omnibus Type, Volume II, Materiel (Translated from the French Hotchkiss Machine Gun Regulations) 1917 The clinometer is covered briefly. I had the manual above at one time, and I have a few scans of the drawings...I need to check to be sure I don't still have the original, but I'm away from my manuals at the moment. If you'll send me your e-mail, I'll forward some of the scanned content to you. David Albert [email protected]

Charlie Flick Posted February 14, 2014 #4 Posted February 14, 2014 Jeff: The other key manual you might want to see is the "Handbook of The Hotchkiss Machine Gun Model of 1914" published by the Ordnance Department in 1918. A good quality reprint of this manual is offered by Cornell Pubs. for about $17, a lot cheaper than one of the originals. http://www.cornellpubs.com/old-guns/item_desc.php?item_id=3955 Regards, Charlie
carthage light guard Posted February 15, 2014 Author #5 Posted February 15, 2014 Many thanks to both of you for your help. This is just what I needed. Regards,Jeff
L999here Posted April 4, 2024 #6 Posted April 4, 2024 Just joined the site and collect the 1914 Hotchkiss guns. Suggest Robert Segel's (died 2022) book detailing all the tool/spare parts and issued items for every military machine gun made from 1895-1945. The section on the 1914 Hotchkiss shows the spare parts and tool box issued to the Hotchkiss squads. I tried to reproduce these for my 3-1914 Hotchkiss guns.
