Do you mean a foam pad added at the rear? If so, it's a paratroop adaptation.

1988 is the date of manufacture.

If you are asking about a black sponge "donut" in the top of the helmet, they were sold at clothing sales as a personal comfort item. They REALLY helped to make the helmet more comfortable when you put the foam pad between the nylon adjustment cords and your head. Is this what you are asking about? If it isn't, we'll need some photos.

THAT'S for what those d@mn velcro straps were used. I have a box of them and could never figure out their purpose (I'm a leg, guys, cut me some slack).
