Distinguished Sand Rat Medal

Recommended Posts

This sold for a mere 30 bucks on eBay, I hope one of you Army marksmanship enthusiasts got it. It's a handmade medal for the Camp Perry matches, stating 'Distinguished Sand Rat'. I have no idea what a sand rat is, but I imagine it's era range slang for something, perhaps someone who shoots low and hits the ground. When I worked the range we called those who shot the berm below the target 'Worm Snipers', so I am guessing this is something similar. Really cool item

I was able to find something that says a sand rat is "The name given to a soldier on duty in the rifle pit during target practice." Seems like a fitting definition for this interesting piece.
