NGCoastArtillery41 Posted February 5, 2014 Share #2 Posted February 5, 2014 Its unfortunate that the ship couldn't find a home as a museum. Its a ship that is oozing with history and it would have been awesome to able to see her proudly continuing her service as an education tool. gunbunnyB/3/75FA Posted February 5, 2014 Share #3 Posted February 5, 2014 truly a shame, but look at it from a different way, how much would have it cost to preserve her tho?
Sabrejet Posted February 5, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted February 5, 2014 It worked for the USS Intrepid!
Wharfmaster Posted February 5, 2014 Share #5 Posted February 5, 2014 Sad but museum ships are cost prohibitive. Even small ones. Not to mention, our country is broke. Hard to get someone to take away a large dead fridge these days, let alone an aircraft carrier full of HAZMAT. W
Sabrejet Posted February 5, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted February 5, 2014 You're right of course! I wasn't actually advocating that they did that, just stating that there is a precedent. I've actually visited the USS Intrepid twice. Awesome!
Jack's Son Posted February 5, 2014 Share #7 Posted February 5, 2014 The Midway in San Diego is doing very well. I have talked to the governing board, and they have certain plans that they are sticking to in order to keep the museum a popular site of tourists as well as locals. The city may be bankrupt, but the Midway makes money, thanks to those conservative retired sailors.
Wharfmaster Posted February 5, 2014 Share #8 Posted February 5, 2014 Even the most popular museum ships don't make a great amount of money. If they did, this historic ship would not be headed for the breakers. W
jeb137 Posted February 5, 2014 Share #9 Posted February 5, 2014 Both Baltimore and Tampa were trying to get her for a museum. Shame neither one had the penny to outright buy her. Jon B Newaygo MI
TreasureHunter Posted February 5, 2014 Share #10 Posted February 5, 2014 I wonder if I can drive to Texas and go dumpster diving! A row of shipboard lockers would look good in my garage. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I467 using Tapatalk

MarkGreen Posted April 20, 2014 Share #15 Posted April 20, 2014 We had a group trying to get the U.S.S. Ranger to be preserved here in Portland, OR, but the Navy decided against it. I don't know how that works, but a lot of folks are saddened by that decision.
SergeantMajorGray Posted June 18, 2014 Share #16 Posted June 18, 2014 Were trying to get the USS Kitty Hawk to go alongside the USS North Carolina I don't know how well it's going though.
sigsaye Posted June 18, 2014 Share #17 Posted June 18, 2014 Just read yesterday that Constellation is going to the breakers. I was on Kitty Hawk. "Connie" was our nemesis. We loved to hate her, even though by the time I served on the Hawk, no one remembered exactly why, some half remembered incident in the builders yards or something. Any way, sad to see her go now too. They were great ships, but like Sailors, they get old and worn out.
12thengr Posted June 28, 2014 Share #18 Posted June 28, 2014 As of yesterday Ranger (CV-61) sits with three of her sisters at the Bremerton Navy Yard. If I get a chance I'll get over this summer and take a few pictures. Many of the Navy's mightiest warships have passed through the mothball fleet there the last several years. Some, like the 'Mighty Mo' BB-63, went on to more permanent berths. Others were not so lucky and traveled only to the breakers yard.
