GeneralLucas Posted January 30, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2014 At an estate sale in Dallas, TX I was sold a lot of documents and letters belonging to a Augustine H. Wilkins who had joined the 12th New York Volunteer Infantry, Company H in April 1861. During the battle of Malvern Hill as a corporal he was captured and spent three months in Libby Prision. He received capture documents signed by Capt. Peter Strauss who was previously a 1st. Lt in Company B of the 12th. Later, after promotion to a NCO, he attempted to be admitted to West Point with a letter to U.S. Secretary of State William Seward who was formally Governor of New York. Wilkins is buried here in Dallas. I will post some of the documents now and perhaps more later.

439th Signal Battalion Posted January 30, 2014 Share #9 Posted January 30, 2014 I always admire how they put so much effort into their penmanship, grammar, and punctuation back then...
