VolunteerArmoury Posted January 17, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 17, 2014 Look in Army Blue: The Uniform of Uncle Sam's Regulars 1848-1873 or More Army Blue: The Uniform of Uncle Sam's Regulars 1874-1887 (can be requested through interlibrary loan). It may be the M1872 (or 3?) dismounted shako.
ludwigh1980 Posted January 17, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 17, 2014 Of the 1872 Pattern, but not Federal. Typical state militia/ national guard issue. U.S. Army M1872 Shako or Dress Caps as they are called does not have the black leather trim on the crown and bottom of cap. instead the body is completely dark blue with light blue woven trim (infantry) or piping around the top crown, with a line of this trim running down each side. The federal piece of course has the M1872 devices for the enlisted cap (eagle, infantry horn in the case of infantry). State issues had a multitude of devices affixed to them. kilgarvan Posted January 21, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 21, 2014 I have seen an identical shako that was from late 1800's and used by the famous 7th Regiment New York National Guard. Nice looking shako!
Tim Posted October 29, 2014 Share #8 Posted October 29, 2014 These generic militia shakos were made through the 1930's. Many units added gold trim and bullion insignia. Baily still makes a plastic body version.
