tankfreak Posted January 4, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 4, 2014 Hi Guys This is my first post in this section of the forum, my collecting interests normally lie with Helmets and Field gear but just recently my wife showed me two items that had originally been collected by her maternal Grandfather. One is I think a US Navy collar badge which could be WW2 and the other is a rank bar? I would like some information on them if possible so I have posted some pictures. Her Grandfather apparently worked at Fortress HQ here in Gibraltar during WW2 helping out as a translator, he spoke italian which came in useful during the interrogation of captured underwater saboteours. Anyway hope you can help. thanks
Lee Ragan Posted January 4, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 4, 2014 Looks like you have a Navy officers cap badge worn on the left front of the overseas cap (or garrison cap), and the miniature rank is worn on the opposite side.
KurtA Posted January 4, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 4, 2014 The rank is Lt Junior Grade.
Grant S. Posted January 6, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 6, 2014 In case you are unfamiliar with the markings on metal insignia the cap badge was made by Hilborn-Hamburger (the "H-H" in the eagle to the left) and is made of sterling silver ("STER") and 5% gold filled (the "1/20 GF"). It is quite possibly WW2 era. The rank bar was made by Vanguard (V-21) and is post 1963-ish, when the government switched to 3 letter/number codes to indicate manufacturer. The 1/20 SF no doubt means 5% silver filled, but I've never seen that designation used for silver before. The cap badge is very nice but the rank bar is quite common. roadrunner Posted January 10, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 10, 2014 Hello V-21 is the hallmark from Vanguard. ( used on items for the Army and Air Force ) V-21-N is the marking, that this item is made for the Navy / Marine Corps. HAVE A NICE DAY Michael
