Theater Made 1948 Regulation Chevrons

Recommended Posts

This from a post I made in Obscure and Uncommon Combat Patches, needed to post it here in Ranks to show a pair of Japanese made 1948 Reg Non Combat Branch Corporal stripes. The color of the stripes seem to be a pale yellow, looking nearly White in these photo. If anyone does find different example of this Japanese made type, whether the Blue on Yellow Combat Branch, or the Gold on Blue Non Combat Branch please feel free to add it here.

Ii have a pair of Combat Corporal that came with a US Constabulary SSI. I thought they were probably made in Germany but who knows?

Thank's for posting these, I should have the title of the topic changed, to Theater Made 1948 Reg stripes, so this way other types from say Germany maybe Italy ( Trieste if they in fact made them ) can be shown too.

Patches,

This chevron appears to be embroidered on a light twill or muslin and then coated with some kind of sizing or diluted glue. It looks like they were sewn on to a uniform at one time. Based on the condition I don't think they were ever laundered. Maybe the soldier replaced them as soon as he could get US Made.

Here are some German-made chevrons of the same era.

Thank's HS, I would venture to say that this Cpl stripe ( you don't have it's twin, it's not a pair? )was sewn to an IKE, an item not washed in water, thus the nice condidtion, it really was with those stripes of and anykind, and from any period, WWII, 50s-70s, to include shoulder patches that might of been sewn to the Khaki Cotton Twill Shirts or Fatique Shirts that were washed in the old famliar way, that we see that distinctive wear and shrinkage however slight or pronounced.

Nice German made SFC Combat strips you posted there

I do have a pair of the Combat Corporal as well as a single Non Combat Corporal nearly identical to the ones on the Ike Jacket. The non combat has been laundered and does not have the sizing on the back.

This would be U.S. Made, in the pinned topic on these there are several examples and talks on the 1948 buck sergeants

A bit late, but as promised, here's my contribution. A standard set of US made chevrons, but with yellow felt backing applied, I think likely for constabulary forces but quite possible for the Cav in Japan.

An Interesting pair of Chevrons there Capt, since these are for a Non Combat Branch NCO, he must of been of a support Branch from a HQ unit of one of those you metioned, in what ever unit these would of been worn in. I wonder how widespread the use of Branch Colored Backing were?

In my 40+ years of collecting chevrons yellow is the only color I have ever seen. I have one of these in my collection as well as a Specialist 2nd Class in yellow on Army green with the same yellow background.

Would this Yellow backing be seen on both Non Combat Branch as posted here, as well as Combat Branch?

I am not sure. I have only seen the non combat technical Sgt with the yellow background. Not sure other ranks had the yellow background. Probably will have to wait till they are identified and attributed. The non combat and 2 inch gold on green were used five years apart. This leads me to believe they were used at a military school.

how about the 5th Marine Div. patch on an army uniform....not that uncommon, except the spear in the center appears black instead of the usual blue. Is it just the lighting, or is the spear black? if so, can you post a better picture?
