Hello,

I got dogtags from a sailor who was on LST-798 from october 1944 to october 1945, but no way to find informations about this LST.

Was she part of the Okinawa Gunto fleet ?

Thanks in advance, E

Well, I was a little pessimistic ... I found some informations but nothing very special and particularly nothing about the LST-798 being involved in amphibious actions like the Okinawa campaigns ... always the same story : laid-down, commissioned ... decommissionned and scraped ;)

... perhaps she only took part to the occupation duty, no campaigns.

Thanks for trying, Bob B)

Salvage Sailor

She has no campaign star so she may not have made it to the Philippines or Okinawa prior to the surrender. Her short service may have been with the Service Force shuttling men and material from here to there. The Pacific is known among sailors as "The Big Pond" and for good reason. Thousands of square miles of empty ocean to cross and LST's were used by all of the area commands and fleets.

So if I understand well, this LST was mainly a transport ship to feed the huge supply machine of the Pacific Fleet.

Thanks to all for your help and happy new year.
