etousa Posted December 27, 2013 #1 Posted December 27, 2013 General Dager while in command of the 11th Armored Division "captured" this German typewriter. It seems General Dager needed a new typewriter, he etched his name on the body of the typewriter, painted the case green, and used it for the rest of his life. A unique bring back!
Patriot Posted December 27, 2013 #2 Posted December 27, 2013 There wouldn't happen to be an "SS" rune key on there?
Patriot Posted December 27, 2013 #4 Posted December 27, 2013 That's remarkable! That rune key makes this an especially desirable typewriter! All things considered, this is a very desirable piece! Congratulations!
doyler Posted December 27, 2013 #8 Posted December 27, 2013 Nice item. Local Artillery officer had one that came out of Dachau
etousa Posted December 28, 2013 Author #10 Posted December 28, 2013 The 11th entered Mauthausen Concentration Camp on May 5, 1945, while there is no way to prove it, I have often thought that is where the typewriter came from
gomorgan Posted December 28, 2013 #12 Posted December 28, 2013 My father served in the 11th and Gen. Holmes Dager also had numerous German daggers engraved and presented them to officers and men under his command at the end of the war. I've seen a couple daggers but not been able to talk anyone out of one.
willysmb44 Posted December 30, 2013 #13 Posted December 30, 2013 A lot of those had the #5 'SS' key replaced after the war. Typewriters in working condition with that key are worth their weight in gold, practically. One that was a vet bring back like this is more so, in my opinion. Been looking for a good working german WW2 typewriter for many years now...
Ed Fedory Posted August 12, 2014 #14 Posted August 12, 2014 A fellow in my town has one of those typewriters and I often think, "Why bring back a typewriter?" Didn't realize they were that desirable an item.
ilikemilitaria Posted November 26, 2014 #15 Posted November 26, 2014 I found one of these locally in an antique shop about 5 years ago. It also had the SS-Rune key. I since have moved it along to another collector more into those type of items. What really blew my mind, was when I found the typewriter in the shop, it still had a card-stock ship ticket on it from when it was shipped back home I guess. The address on the card was in my hometown and birthplace! Never did find out who the owner was that shipped it/brought it back home. dave
AZPhil Posted November 26, 2014 #17 Posted November 26, 2014 That is fantastic and liked mentioned, a very valuable item. Semper Fi Phil
