USS SAMPSON (DDG-10) Charles F. Adams class in service 1961 to 1991. She was an Atlantic Fleet Cold Warrior and her final cruise was Desert Shield in 1990-1991 before heading to the scrapyard

On August 7, 1990 the Sampson deployed with the USS Saratoga battle group in support of Desert Shield/Storm. Once there the Sampson performed the final Adams class guided missile destroyer deployment as a unit of the Maritime Interception Force, conducting the first boarding and search of a merchant on 28 AUG 1990, during OPERATION DESERT SHIELD and the first diversion of a ship with prohibited cargo. After conducting the first-ever exercise ASROC shot in the Red Sea, USS SAMPSON operated with ships of various NATO navies conducting surveillance and protection of shipping in the approaches to the Suez Canal. Sampson was decommissioned on 24 June 1991 exactly 30 years after commissioning,

A recent find. The WESTPAC 1969 is in gold tinsel thread and was hard to capture in the photo

I've always appreciated the modern design elements of this airframe gaggle patch as depicted in the CVA island & 63 hull.  When you have this one in hand, the gold thread gleams and really pops out.

THE BLACK DRAGON, 16 INCH LANDSCAPING LOWERING MOUNTAINS

USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) BEIRUIT, LEBANON 1982-1983

1364872987_BB62NEWJERSEY015.jpg.f845e32e0f1ad14dbea7af2de7c5ba76.jpg

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 8 - The United States battleship New Jersey bombarded Druse and Syrian gun batteries in Lebanon for more than nine hours today in the heaviest and most sustained American military action since the marines arrived here 16 months ago.

The gunfire was directed at targets ''in Syrian-controlled Lebanon which have been firing on the city of Beirut,'' a Marine spokesman, Maj. Dennis Brooks, said. The shells fired into the capital had landed in Christian-dominated East Beirut, several miles from the Marine compound at Beirut International Airport.

In Washington, the Pentagon said the destroyer Caron joined in the bombardment, firing more than 300 five-inch shells. It said the New Jersey fired more than 250 16-inch shells.

1293696476_BB62NEWJERSEY016.jpg.dd0db8331bb5dbfd7decbf02dabae99b.jpg

According to the Lebanese Christian Phalangist radio, the American bombardment pounded artillery and missile batteries from Shuweifat, just south of Beirut, all the way to around Shtaura, 22 miles east of the capital. The radio said 30 Druse and Syrian gun batteries had been knocked out along with a Druse military command post.

The New Jersey's huge 16-inch guns could be clearly seen spewing long yellow flames as they blasted away from the ship's position south of Beirut. Each round fired by its gunners shook the entire city. Windows rattled, and the terrifying roar sent the few people on the streets scattering for cover.

A 16-inch shell, roughly the weight of a small car, packs enough firepower to slash a 200-yard-wide clearing out of dense, triple-canopy jungle while also shredding trees and underbrush for 400 yards beyond, according to Navy officials.  A full broadside from the New Jersey's nine big guns "will level almost anything standing within an area the size of one square mile," according to a Navy article on the battleship.  The ship is also capable of firing heavier, armor-piercing shells which can penetrate "30 feet of reinforced concrete and have been known to reconfigure islands and mountains," the article noted.

"There will be a lot of holes," one Pentagon official said of last week's bombardment.  "It oughta look like the moon up there."
