USS WALKER (DD-517) Three war Fletcher class in service 1943 to 1969

Escort Destroyer Squadron One, CORTDESDIV 11, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

In July 1951 WALKER joined the newly formed Escort Destroyer Squadron ONE based at Pearl Harbor, T. H., and there became the fourth member of Escort Destroyer Division ELEVEN.

Korean War era patch above & Vietnam War era patch below

In November 1951, WALKER departed for the Western Pacific area and there joined the United Nations Blockading Force assisting our ground troops in the Korean War. She escorted the fast carrier task forces that were steaming up and down the hostile shores supporting our Army with strategic air strikes. The fourfold dangers from enemy mines, submarines, air attacks and the bitter cold were never too great for WALKER. More than once the ground forces found enemy fire threatening their advances and called WALKER in for call fire shore bombardment. She chalked up several artillery emplacements and railroad installations. March 1952 found CORTDESDIV 11 back in Pearl Harbor.

On 1 September 1985, Hewitt and other members of Destroyer Squadron 31 became the first Pacific Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Squadron. The squadron's basic mission was to locate and track submarines in the Eastern Pacific, to develop USW tactics and training, and to serve as a ready response force under Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet. From September 1985 to April 1987, Hewitt and the other ships in DesRon 31 set new standards of excellence in USW.

This is her final Westpac cruise patch from August 1959 to February 1960 during which she suffered several breakdowns and spent time in the SRF/Drydock (ship repair facilities) at Guam and Yokosuka.

post-2322-0-70706500-1516910493.jpg

She was intended to go to the Reserve fleet in 1960 but was scrapped due to a massive collision at sea with USS COLLETT

At the end of February 1959, the destroyer began her overhaul at San Francisco. Repairs complete, she resumed active duty late in June. In mid-August, Ammen departed San Diego for operations between Pearl Harbor and Guam. At the end of September, she returned briefly to the California coast at Long Beach. Early in October, the destroyer embarked upon the final western Pacific deployment of her career. She returned to the west coast from that tour of duty early in 1960. Later that spring the warship began preparations for inactivation.

On 19 July 1960, while making the transit in a heavy fog between Seal Beach and San Diego for decommissioning, Ammen was struck by Collett. The collision killed 11 Ammen sailors and injured 20 others. The USCGC Heather (WAGL / WLB-331) participated in the assistance effort. Ammen was initially towed into Long Beach by USS GEAR (ARS-34) and, later, from there to San Diego where she was decommissioned on 15 September 1960. Ammens name was struck from the Navy List on 1 October 1960, and she was sold to the National Metal and Steel Corporation on 20 April 1961 for scrapping.

I didn't see this one posted after scanning the entire thread... DD-655 USS John Hood. From my Dad's collection, although he served on the Grand Canyon AD-28 tender. I suspect the Canyon was tending this destroyer at some point and he wound up with a patch... New patch; removed from the Gemsco bag for these photos.
