USS CHARLES R. WARE (DD-865) Gearing class in service 1945 to 1974

Atlantic Fleet - Med Cold Warrior - Vietnam Operation Sea Dragon

post-2322-0-90767500-1498328310.jpg

The year 1967 was the most different year in the history of the ship. On 21 February, Charles R. Ware left Mayport en route to Vietnam. After passing through the Panama Canal, Charles R. Ware entered the Pacific Ocean for the first time. The vessel made several ports of call in the Pacific. The destroyer was a member of Task Group 77.1 on "Operation Sea Dragon", the destruction of North Vietnamese radar complexes. In almost twenty missions, 1080 rounds of ammunition were expended at enemy targets. On five occasions the enemy returned fire, but no hits or casualties were sustained. In all, Charles R. Ware spent 90 days in the combat zone before returning to Mayport on 19 September 1967. Over 61,000 miles were traveled with 58 underway replenishments accomplished to provide the destroyer's logistical requirements.

USS BORDELON (DD/DDR-881) Gearing class in service 1945 to 1977

In better days, USS BORDELON (DDR-881) as a Radar Picket "The Busy Bee"

DANFS - Bordelon operated as a part of the occupation force in Japan until March 1946, then alternated operations along the east coast and in the Caribbean with the 2nd Fleet with deployments to the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet.

Bordelon assisted in fighting the fire on the cruiser Belknap after Belknap's collision with the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy on the night of 22 November 1975.

post-2322-0-70435700-1498328884.jpg

On 14 September 1976, while refueling alongside USS John F. Kennedy, the ships came together and collided. Bordelon's port bow and some of the superstructure were damaged and the main mast snapped and fell on the signal shack, injuring some of the handling team. The ammunition ship Mount Baker was also involved in the rescue of Bordelon by escorting her to an ammunition depot where Mount Baker's explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team off-loaded her entire cargo of ammunition while providing electric and water services.

post-2322-0-36538200-1498329243_thumb.jpg

Due to the damage to the superstructure and electronics and the age and condition of the hull, Bordelon was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 February 1977, transferred to Iran in July 1977, and cannibalized for spare parts.

From the Naval History and Heritage Command website

Private First Class Harold C. Agerholm, USMCR, (1925-1944)

Harold Christ Agerholm was born on 29 January 1925 in Racine, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corps Reserve from that state in July 1942. After completing basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, he was assigned to Fourth Battalion, Tenth Marines, Second Marine Division. In January 1943, while stationed with his unit in New Zealand, Agerholm was promoted to Private First Class. In November, he participated in the fierce fighting on Betio Island during the Battle of Tarawa.

His second combat operation began in mid-June 1944, when he landed on Saipan, in the Marianas. On 7 July 1944, when Japanese forces counter-attacked and captured a neighboring position, Agerholm immediately volunteered to help evacuate the wounded . For three hours, he made repeated trips under heavy rifle and mortar fire, single-handedly evacuating approximately 45 casualities. Rushing to help what he thought were other wounded Marines, he was mortally wounded by a Japanese sniper. For his "conspicious gallantry and intrepidity," he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Harold C. Agerholm is buried at Mount Cemetery, Racine, Wisconsin.

USS Agerholm (DD-826), 1946-1982, was named in honor of Private First Class Harold C. Agerholm.

Class leader USS SPRUANCE (DD-963), The Spru-Can in service 1975 to 2005

USS SPRUANCE was the first of a highly-successful class of anti-submarine warfare and anti-ship destroyers, and was the first destroyer powered by gas turbines in the U.S. Navy. At first she was armed with two 5-inch naval guns, an ASROC missile launcher, and an eight-cell NATO Sea Sparrow missile launcher. Spruance received one Mark 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS) during the late 1980s. This replaced the original Mark 16 ASROC launcher. Also added to Spruance after several years of service was an eight-cell launcher for Harpoon antiship missiles.

USS ROBINSON (DD-562) Fletcher class in service 1944 to 1964. Robinson received eight battle stars for World War II service.

The Robinson appeared in the movie "Away All Boats", accurately depicting the Fletcher destroyer class's antisubmarine role in the Pacific Theater by dropping live depth charges.
