jeff41st Posted August 18, 2020 Share #676 Posted August 18, 2020 Thanks John. Have always been leery of this seller. Many of his wings seem questionable and terrible pictures to boot.

pfrost Posted August 18, 2020 Share #678 Posted August 18, 2020 Buyer beware. There are some other threads about the STER LGB and the wide pin placement on these wings that were probably made for collectors in the 90-2000s IIRC I have seen them in the TO and Balloon ratings. Maybe also the flight surgeon as well. As mentioned previously, apparently Charles Fitzsimmons (or another collector) had a bunch of these made in various ratings by LGB and illustrated them in his book. Of course, this is only hearsay from another high-end collector so I could very well be wrong -- but it fits with other information I have gleaned over the years. Take it with a grain of salt, but it would behoove you not to spend a lot of money on these. Ironically enough, I have seen more than a few "good" vintage TO wings show up on ebay in the last year. So now may be a good time to add one of these hard to find ratings to the collection.
5thwingmarty Posted August 19, 2020 Share #679 Posted August 19, 2020 Someone at the SOS had a whole box of the LGB STER wings. He knew they were not WWII vintage and I don't think he paid a lot for them. He was not selling them, just showing them to a few folks. I believe he had TO and balloon and a few others. kristoffer Posted September 10, 2020 Share #680 Posted September 10, 2020 What do you guys say about this TO wing? I can't seem to find any maker mark on it altough the seller says it made by Amcraft. I like the patina on it. Regards Kristoffer
kristoffer Posted September 10, 2020 Share #681 Posted September 10, 2020 If this wing should get the thumbs up from the forum what about the clutches? Would they be correct for an Amcraft wing? I have searched around a bit and the ones I found looks different. /Kristoffer
pfrost Posted September 10, 2020 Share #682 Posted September 10, 2020 at first look, they seem fine to me. This "AMCRAFT" snowflake pattern wing seems to have come in both pin back and clutch back versions. The also seem to have been made in sterling silver and unmarked. I don't recall if they are hallmarked AMCRAFT, but they were probably made by them This is thread where a similar wing is discussed.
B-17Guy Posted September 10, 2020 Share #683 Posted September 10, 2020 Wing, is fine. I have one like it and you are correct, those are the wrong clutches. Amcraft had long posts and the proper clutches are marked, see pics from my T/O. John
kristoffer Posted September 11, 2020 Share #684 Posted September 11, 2020 Thanks to the both of of you. I am glad it is a good wing. Would it be easy to find Amcraft clutches to it? If I get it I would eventually want to replace them. Thanks Kristoffer
WWIIinterviews Posted September 13, 2020 Share #685 Posted September 13, 2020 A set of glider wings with STERLING stamp and NS MEYER mark as well. Thoughts?

My understanding is that this is a re-strike due to the lack of a cammed pin.
pfrost Posted September 13, 2020 Share #687 Posted September 13, 2020 Ditto. Also the font of the STERLING mark is too large when compared to originals. There are some good threads on NS Meyer restrikes.

digi-shots Posted October 6, 2020 Share #697 Posted October 6, 2020 What the the opinions on these 2 Service Pilot wings? #1 - Gemsco, NY - I think these are ok, WWII vintage #2 - Look like Meyer design but no maker mark, just sterling and the pin opens 180 degrees. Thank you
Tesla Posted October 6, 2020 Share #698 Posted October 6, 2020 Gemsco is good and the Meyer is a restrike.
digi-shots Posted October 6, 2020 Share #699 Posted October 6, 2020 Thanks, that “Meyers” just didn’t look right.
pfrost Posted October 6, 2020 Share #700 Posted October 6, 2020 To quibble just a little bit, the NS Meyer may actually be a casting rather than a restrike.
