MINE FLOTILLA ONE

post-2322-0-96497600-1495910918.jpg

Mine Flotilla (MinFlot) ONE was formed and COMINRON THREE reported to this Commander, who wore
both MinFlot1/MinRon 3 “hats” for it’s duration - until the early seventies. Mine Division 33 consisted of ten
MSL’s, a Mike Boat (LCM), an LCPR, and one LCVP. All three Mine Divisions reported to MinFlot 1/MinRon
3, as did a mine disposal/EOD function, and the Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Surveillance Unit 12
(MIUWS 12), until a 1965 trip to DaNang, SVN when we dropped them off permanently for Vietnam duty. All
embarked units were transported aboard the USS Epping Forest MCS-7, and the MSC’s often sailed
independently, but convoyed with EF frequently to many WesPac destinations as a mine flotilla.

USS FORCE (MSO-445) 5" Gun Club patch

MSO 445 USS FORCE Gun Club 001.jpg

Reverse - USS FORCE (MSO-445) lost at sea 1973My tour aboard Force ended in January, 1961. In 1972 the ship’s home port was changed to Guam. Unfortunately the ship was lost by fire in the After Engine Room on 24 April 1973 while enroute from Subic Bay to Guam. The fire apparently was caused by a leak in the fuel line on one of the outboard main engines. A contributing factor appears to have been the difficulty in getting the engine stopped due to the inertia of the large flywheel along with some questionable damage control actions on the part of the crew.  More details concerning the loss of the Force and the results of the subsequent investigation can be found on the Navy MSO Association website entitled “MSO Casualties.” This web site also provides information concerning losses and major casualties experienced aboard other ships of the class.

There were quite a few Naval Facilities in Long Beach at the time, including the Naval Shipyard, Naval Station, and several piers. A number of destroyers were home ported there as well as all of the Pacific force minesweepers. Force was assigned to Mine Division (MINEDIV) 72. We were referred to as “Can Do 72”. The other ships in our division included:

USS Firm (MSO 444) – Division flagship
USS Prime (MSO 466)
USS Embattle (MSO 434)
USS Reaper (MSO 467)

MOMAG - MOBILE MINE ASSEMBLY GROUP

post-2322-0-86453100-1533688920.jpg

Before 1975, mine shops around the world were divisions of various naval magazines or ordnance facilities. This arrangement frequently put the magazine's priorities above those of the mine shop's, resulting in Minemen often being assigned to divisions outside their rating. On 1 July 1975, the reorganization of the mine force resulted in the establishment of both the Commander, Mine Warfare Command (COMINEWARCOM) and the Commander, Mobile Mine Assembly Group (COMOMAG). This reorganization established MOMAG detachments and units located around the world.

USS VALOR (MSO-472) Agile class in service as AM-472 in 1954, reclassified as MSO-472 in 1955, decommissioned in 1970

She served with Mine Force Atlantic Fleet primarily homeported in Charleston, SC (MINDIV 44 - MINRON 4) and deployed with the Sixth Fleet in the Med. She also was operationally subordinated to the Belgian Navy and served in Ostend and the Belgian Congo. Reverting to USN control, she was assigned to Panama City in support of the mine countermeasures development program of the Navy Mine Defense Laboratory.

Interesting hand made patch, possibly Belgian made or by a crewman's wife? It's the only USS VALOR patch I've ever seen.
