MOMAG - Mobile Mine Assembly Groups Nine and Eleven

Before 1975, mine shops around the world were divisions of various naval magazines or ordnance facilities. This arrangement frequently put the magazine's priorities above those of the mine shop's, resulting in Minemen often being assigned to divisions outside their rating. On 1 July 1975, the reorganization of the mine force resulted in the establishment of both the Commander, Mine Warfare Command (COMINEWARCOM) and the Commander, Mobile Mine Assembly Group (COMOMAG). This reorganization established MOMAG detachments and units located around the world.

How does the USN destroy mines in the 'modern age'?

One way is with a Mine Neutralization Charge Mark 77

Delivered by the new generation of USN Minesweepers which replaced the Korean War era MSO's

Awesome patches. The USS FORTIFY (#51) from End Sweep is beautiful and Philippine made, like the original End Sweep TF-78 patches.

Yep, that's a nice one. I usually look for those attributed to ships or ID'd to crewmen, this one met both measures.

Most of the patches I've been posting today came from a career USN Mine Warfare officer who was XO and CO of several of these sweepers

MSO 508 USS ACME 003.jpg

His last assignment in Panama City was as CO of the USS ACME (MSO-508)

Class leader of the 'new' minesweepers. She was in service from 1956 to 1970

MSO 508 USS ACME 004.jpg

Before he left the Panama City squadron in 1962, he collected these excellent Japanese patches as mementos of his service

Is this a generic WWII minesweeper patch, or was it for a specific unit or squadron? It belongs to a Carpenters Mate 1/C aboard USS Saunter AM-295. She struck a mine in Manila Bay on 26 Feb. 1945. Crew saved her from sinking but never saw duty again.

Cool design, never seen this one before. I like the END SWEEP design on it. I assume it has something to do with Haiphong & Suez/M.E. area.
