Lee Ragan Posted December 16, 2013 Share #6 Posted December 16, 2013 Nice looking patches.I think their motto is 'Iron Men Wooden Boats'? That's right. When I was a BM3 in the USNR back in the early 70's, lots of us in my unit pulled Active Duty for Training on minesweepers. I spent 2 wonderful weeks on Peacock (see patch above). Another saying about mine sweepers you'll hear in the Navy is that "every ship in the Navy can be a minesweeper.... once". Oh yea, nothing like being rocked to sleep on a wooden hull sweep tied to the pier!
sigsaye Posted December 16, 2013 Share #7 Posted December 16, 2013 I've heard, "Wooden Ships and Iron Men", and "Where the fleet goes, We've already Been". Had a buddy whose first ship was a mine sweep. Two weeks after he got out of boot camp, they were on their way to Viet Nam when the ship caught fire over the Marianas Trench and sank. He thinks they were in the water 12 hours before being picked up. "Welcome to the Navy Lad". He retired as MACM at 32 years.
Lee Ragan Posted December 17, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 17, 2013 I've heard, "Wooden Ships and Iron Men", and "Where the fleet goes, We've already Been". Yep, we heard about that incident. On board ship the fire drill was "get over the side & in the water", cuz them babies were supposed to burn like crazy. I don't know if jumping in the water was SOP or not, but I never went thru a fire drill while on a sweep.
sigsaye Posted December 17, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 17, 2013 My buddy didn't jump, BM1 picked him up and tossed him over the side. Buddy had no idea what was happening, just heard bell ringing and someone yelling "Fire". Said he was still holding a paint scraper in his hand when he came to the surface. My buddy grew up in Iowa, boot camp in Great Lakes then two weeks is getting tossed over the side in the Pacific. "It's Not Just A Job"!

Bearmon Posted August 29, 2014 Author Share #15 Posted August 29, 2014 Here is an early USS Frigate Bird MSC 191, mines are yellow and there is no "E" on the right most mine. ( I assume the "E" is a Battle E won/earned by the ship). I have a later version posted in this thread also.
