My main focus is WW2 USN SQUADRON PATCHES with emphasis on veteran-named items or groupings. I enjoy researching their history and also love to research unknown squadron patches which are quite common amongst USN patches because of the lack of research material and documentation. If you've got any leads on items, let me know.

Does anybody know about the US Navy 2-part history called the "DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN AVIATION SQUADRONS, Vol 1 and Vol 2"??

I can't tell you how important and informative this electronic publication is. It's criminal that it's not available as a book. You can check it out here, and I HIGHLY recommend you download the tons of files that go with it. It is THE best reference on Naval squadrons out there, hands down. Just select "Naval Aviation Publications Posted on our Web Site" and you will see the headings. Now why they chose to do it this way, I don't know..... ENJOY!!!

Welcome, Mike. I'd love to see your older ones from the 40s and 50s. Rare and unknowns are especially of interest. Jeffro

l collect Navy in general but with a slight emphasis on the Fly boys, I dont have much so far but am expanding as funds permit, so far I have a Late WW2 Nylon flying Suit, a Midway era flight helmet, a Pilots uniform jacket just the dreary day to day summer Khaki Coat, boring ribbon not flash, this about covers my foreray in the Flight part of things, got a few badges just aircrew wings etc, its difficult to concentrate on the USN from Australia not much about here but I am managing ok.

Hello,

I also collect U S Naval Aviation from WWII and earlier. While my main interest is WWII and earlier NAVY squadron patches, I have also put together a fine collection of WWII and earlier flight helmets (especially rigger modified examples), patched flight jackets,i.e. M422, M422A, AN6552, and ANJ3-A. I'v been working for 9 years on publishing a reference book on WWII and earlier Navy squadron patches, but have hit a dead end with not being allowed to include the DISNEY designed patches, which make up a healthy portion of the adopted patches. They are very protective at Disney of others using their designs, and to omit them from any reference book would render any work of this nature quite incomplete. I have nearly 300 original WWII patches in my collection which include many rarely seen VS, VC, squadrons that were either island based, or based on the small CVE carriers. I did ,however contribute somewhat to a fine reference book which I very nuch recommend as a reference on Squadron patches of units based on the Escort carriers (CVEs). The book is "ESCORT CARRIERS AND THEIR AIR UNIT MARKINGS DURING W.W.II IN THE PACIFIC" (second edition) by James Dresser ISBN 0-9604696-1-3 by Heuss Printing, Inc. 903 North Second Street, Ames ,Iowa. Unfortunately in the preface Mr Dresser notes He could not illustrate any of the Disney designed patches as they refused Him authorization to do so, as they did with my attempt. It is however very informative. Hope this helps with all you Navy Air Guys.

Mike, Thanks for the reference. Wow, 300 patches?! It's too bad you can't convince Disney to lighten up...maybe even play along by funding the research and or publishing the book. Have you ever thought of publishing the non-Disney stuff along with your own basic crude sketches or just list descriptions of the Disney designs? ASMIC, flight jacket/nose art book authors seem to be able to pull it off; not to mention the websites displaying Disney designs everyday. Any chance you can post some of your patched jackets? Would love to see them. Jeffro

Hi all

I collect post ww2 USN (and USAF also) flight gears. No patch but two from VU-3 ( enf of the 50's), and two other from VCN-1 (1948/49) and VF-23 (1954) on a jacket. Although I love ww2 USN aeronautical stuffs and history...

Cheers,

Franck

Jeffro,

You are welcome. I could do a book on non Disney patches but it seems a shame that some of the most colorful patches are Disney Designs. I'm still trying to persue getting some authorization from Disney studios. It's just it takes so much time dealing with their legal department. I would like to post photos of my "patched Navy flight jackets but I'm told I haven't the proper camera for that or the know how to put them on the internet. I'm going to ask one of my sons to show me how this is done as I'm "old school" and have resisted coming into the electronic 21st Century for some time now. Hopefully I'll soon be able to post them as I really enjoy this forum and the members, for the most part, seem so friendly and helpful to young beginning collectors. I know many of your members, as I usually set up at the SHOW OF SHOWS in Louisville, Kentucky and most of the shows in and around Ohio (my home State). Thanks for your interest.

Mike
