48MMS Posted December 11, 2013 #1 Posted December 11, 2013 Picked this up for under $5, a large Aerospace Defense Command patch. It doesn't have the satelites like the more modern and smaller version, but is a nice addition. I have seen a similar patch on the USAFPatches site and would guess this was a transitional patch from the older Air Defense Command to the Aerospace Air Command.
firefighter Posted December 12, 2013 #2 Posted December 12, 2013 Thats pretty cool. Not sure if I would have noticed that.I would have to agree transitional or manufacture error.Either way a neat variation.
48MMS Posted December 12, 2013 Author #3 Posted December 12, 2013 Thanks. I think it was a case of having some ADC "blank scrolls" and ultilizing them until the final design could be sewn. I had an old 410th OMS that was actually a 4042nd OMS with the 410th OMS tab added on. Likewise a way to get the patches out to the unit until the actual design could be delivered.
TLHorstead Posted December 12, 2013 #4 Posted December 12, 2013 Air Defense Command was redesignated as Aerospace Defense Command (ADCOM) on 15 January 1968 to reflect that fundamental mission change, the addition of Missile Warning Squadrons. The only part of the insignia that changed was the Scroll. The insignia did not add satellites or other elements, When ADC stood down the Fighter Mission went to TAC (ADTAC) and the Missile Warming mission and Cheyenne Mountain / Peterson Field was assigned to SAC, The Missile Warming mission and Cheyenne Mountain / Peterson Field later formed the basics of Space Command amd the Space Command insignia was approved. 48MMS Posted December 12, 2013 Author #5 Posted December 12, 2013 Terry, what about the smaller Aerospace Defense Command patches that have the orbiting satelites on them? They are 3" and very common.
GeneralLucas Posted December 17, 2013 #7 Posted December 17, 2013 Nice patch..... here is a Japanese made Air Defense Command patch insignia made for a cigarette lighter circa 1962. The lightning bolt should be red and the eagle has long legs on this example.
smwinter207 Posted August 30, 2021 #8 Posted August 30, 2021 Found a 1969 dated overalls with the satellites on the patch.
yokota57 Posted August 30, 2021 #9 Posted August 30, 2021 Reverse side of my 93d FIS Japanese-lighter.
