A recent acquisition from a few months ago- beautifully mounted and shows quite a breadth of service.  I have been told this may be attributable but the potential ID dictates further research.

I have an odd rack here, the medallions are not on the correct ribbons it appears and a few of the ribbons I am unable to identify? Next question is the opposite side of the medallions are odd as well, art least to me. Any help with ID would be appreciated, the National Defense. Occupation and Pacific theater I obviously am familiar with but not the others.

Thanks,

Robin-

Here is my updated bar.  My previous post in this thread was nine years ago.  A few changes since then.  30 years and running!  I am very proud and honored.  For my branch, the MSM is a Command Master Chief / O6 Commanding Officer level award.

Thanks Chris.  That's 30 years worth so far.  Another 14 planned, although I don't think there are many additional new medals that can be added.  It's been a fun career.  I absolutely love the work and ability to contribute to the bigger picture.

Here is a set.  The Navy Cross is interesting in that in the full size set it is one of those Black Widow types, so I presume the miniature is some sort of replacement only because I've seen miniature Navy Crosses of the Black Widow variety issued to individuals of the same era for the same action.

Here is one I saw posted on Letgo a couple of years back. I tried to make contact with them, but it was all crickets. I think it was out of the Vegas area. Did anyone grab these?

The grouping of Captain Herbert H. Michael: 1904 graduate of the US Naval Academy (classmate of Admiral Bull Halsey), veteran of Cuban Pacification, the Conflict in Mexico, WWI, and recipient of the US Navy’s second highest award for valor: the Navy Cross.

Captain Michael served as Commanding Officer of the Tucker class Destroyer USS Conyngham during WWI, which saw heavy action during the Great War’s Battle of the Atlantic. Conyngham was involved in numerous rescue operations of shipwreck survivors that had been victims of German U-Boats, and assisted in the attacks of several U-Boats during the course of her career. Most notably was the case of U-62.

Conyngham was escorting a convoy of merchant vessels when suddenly a German U-Boat’s periscope (U-62) became visible in the middle of the group. Immediately, Captain Michael ordered the Destroyer to attack the now submerged submarine with her depth charges. After a short while, oil and debris welled up to the surface from where the submarine had dived, leading Michael and his crew to believe they’d had a kill. The US fleet and British Admiralty commended Michael for his bravery in pressing the attack on this submarine, and awarded Conyngham a “probable” kill. Unfortunately though, it was later discovered that U-62 (though severely damaged) had survived the encounter to fight another day.

At the conclusion of the Great War, for his excellent leadership skills and unwavering bravery throughout the Atlantic campaign, Captain Michael was awarded the Navy Cross and the Commander grade to the French Legion of Honor.

His Navy Cross citation reads:

“The President of the United States takes pleasure in Awarding the Navy Cross to Herbert H. Michael for distinguished service in his line of profession as Commanding Officer of USS Conyngham, engaged in the important, exacting, and hazardous duty of patrolling the waters infested with enemy submarines and mines, in escorting and protecting vitally important convoys of troops and supplies through these waters, in offensive and defensive action, vigorously and unremittingly prosecuted against all forms of enemy naval activity during the Great European War”

Captain Michael would continue to serve in the US Navy until retiring in 1939 as Commanding Officer of the US Naval Training Station in Norfolk Virginia. He would later pass away in 1948.49303be8c24b3e3d45fa66b10df7ec89.jpg

Thank you Chris!

Those groups are incredible! Especially the DSO/Navy Cross Bar! What are the details on them?

Also, I think they did make Black Widow minis, but early on during the war along with the full sized. Mine is probably from around ‘38, so it’s not truly a Black Widow, but still looks pretty cool.

This miniature Defense Department Meritorious Civilian Service Award was awarded to Frank A. Bartimo, a distinguished attorney and former naval officer. At the time the medal was awarded, Frank was serving on the Secretary of Defense’s General Counsel. His citation reads in part;

“Mr. Bartimo has been of invaluable assistance in resolving some of the most complex problems confronting this office. Particularly commendable has been his work in connection with highly sensitive and classified areas involving intelligence, espionage, and counter espionage; the preparation of legislation medical and dental care for department military personnel, and the industrial security program.” It continues to read: “...Also his participation in the NATO Security Counsel and the International Police Organization. Mr. Bartimo has consistently demonstrated great initiative, imagination, courage, and devotion to duty and respect for individual rights...”

I picked this lot up on eBay a few months ago. The seller had all three items listed separately, but I managed to keep them together. Unfortunately, they didn't have any information on the veteran. Judging by the lack of a Good Conduct Medal, I'm guessing they were a doctor, chaplain, or a Seabee officer.
