otter42 Posted December 3, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2013 Bought this one today. Found out a little about the Navy OI Div from a quick google, but wondered if this patch is specific to any one ship? And what era do you think this is from? Thanks for any help, Ken OI DIVISION.Led by the Combat Information Center Officer (CICO), OI Division consists of Operations Specialists (OSs). They operate radars, navigation equipment, and communication equipment in the Combat Information Center (CIC). They evaluate radar displays, identify contacts, and carry out the tactical decisions for the Combat System. They plot imagery data using maps and charts and receive data from computerized intelligence systems ashore and afloat. This division is responsible for the collection and dissemination of all combat information required for the ship to assess the tactical situation, and successfully employ the unique combat capabilities of the complex warship. The OSs always remain “FROSTY and OSCAR MIKE!” What does FROSTY and OSCAR MIKE mean? Dave Posted December 3, 2013 Share #2 Posted December 3, 2013 Pretty cool patch...I think there's at least one former OS on here who might be able to comment about FROSTY and OSCAR MIKE. I spent five years of my career standing watch in CIC and never heard either of those terms...they might be "old school" ones well before my time... Bearmon Posted December 3, 2013 Share #4 Posted December 3, 2013 Stay cool and on the move, not sure if this is a Navy term or not.... (From Call of Duty video game) I have heard of "Oscar Mike" for on the move but not the Frosty part. I would not think the patch is ship specific either. Bearmon Posted December 3, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 3, 2013 I have a pretty neat OI division patch from a Westpac cruise. I like the "take off" of the rating badge done with the crow inside the OI Division patch
otter42 Posted December 3, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted December 3, 2013 I copied that paragraph off the USS Kane ships website, so maybe it means something aboard that ship? http://www.public.navy.mil/surfor/ddg77/Pages/departments.aspx Thanks Bearmon, I like the patches! Perhaps it is a Call of Duty thing...that would post date my time in CIC, so that is entirely possible. It could also just be a O'Kane specific thing too... topdcnut Posted December 3, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 3, 2013 Compare this patch to a USS America patch I think they are somewhat similar. As to the terms look into an OS 3and 2 rate manual or see if there are any 60=70s cruise books posted on line. As Dave stated these may be common or slang terms from a previous generation. Salvage Sailor Posted December 4, 2013 Share #13 Posted December 4, 2013 Aloha Everyone, I'd say this is a generic OI Division patch and not a USS AMERICA patch. As I recall the term "Stay Frosty" came into use in mid-1980's and it basically means keep cool under pressure which is appropriate for OS's in CIC. "Oscar Mike" is phonetic for "on the move" which I also recall hearing in the mid to late 80's. Here are two more CIC patches. (Also a former OS in several OI Divisions)
Bearmon Posted December 4, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 4, 2013 Nice Patches Salvage Sailor, I like the Christ I'm Confused patch. Being an EW I also worked in CIC on a FF.
67Rally Posted December 4, 2013 Share #15 Posted December 4, 2013 Look for a "Clowns In the Cave" CIC patch. Some of my battle group OS counterparts on the Texas had some done up in the PI back in '89. - S

sigsaye Posted December 17, 2013 Share #21 Posted December 17, 2013 One thing I noticed is that Sailors are always Sailors. No matter how long it's been or what has happened to them since, when Sailors get together they drop back into their sea going persona. Might be that way for other service folks too, I've run into guys who were SMs in WW 2 and we just start beating up Radiomen. Can't help it
TreasureHunter Posted December 18, 2013 Share #22 Posted December 18, 2013 I would think Frosty pertains to how cold it is in CIC, topsiders were always wearing jackets, even in summer. Just my guess. The Crypto space on my destroyer had "In God we trust, all others we monitor. "
sigsaye Posted December 19, 2013 Share #23 Posted December 19, 2013 I remember using the term "Stay Frosty", "Be Frosty", He's Frosty", in the late '70s, early '80s to mean, Be Cool", "Cool It", Take it Easy", "Taking it Easy", "Chilling" or other variations of "handling the stress" . It was one of those American Slang Terms that came and went. This one did not hang around long
67Rally Posted December 19, 2013 Share #24 Posted December 19, 2013 The only frosty we cared about in the 80s-90s was of the mug/glass variety with chilled amber/golden goodness.
