oldabewla Posted December 3, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2013 Here is some of my canteens collection. I have more of them but all not pictured! some unissued and some not! I'm a sucker for the 1944 dated US made canteen covers they are super hard to find! I found one older thread here on the forum and only 5% count for the MFG during WWII. I always figured the british made 1944 covers are rare but not! 1943 British made are rare one The American made covers I have found so far are: Gates MFG CO 1944 Airtress Midland 1944 Collette MFG CO 1944 Jeff Q.M.D. 1944

Gregory Posted December 3, 2013 Share #4 Posted December 3, 2013 Here is something from my collection -- Airtress 1944 and Collette 1944. The Airtress is double rarity -- the year of manufacturing and 8 stitching lines on front.
Browninggunner688 Posted December 3, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 3, 2013 I have 60 canteens and covers and have never noticed that I dont have a 1944 dated U.S. made one !!! I have 6 British made one's dated 1944 and no 1943 dated ones but have 11 1943 U.S. made ones. I have a 1942 dated AIRTESS MID INC with 8 stitching rows and 2 TROXEL MFG CO 1942 dated ones. I understand these ones are scarce. Are the 8 stitching rows fronts rare ? I also have a BAKER LOCKWOOD 1941 rear seam with 8 rows. Nice collection by the way, I really do like canteens for some reason, keep it up. If any one could help with a 1944 dated U.S. made one please pm me. Nick. oldabewla Posted December 4, 2013 Author Share #8 Posted December 4, 2013 I check out my collecting and found no 8 stitching rows shucks!! but here is a rare one?? Baker-Lockwood A & T C.O. 1945 3 roll stitching? this RARE??? Thank for the great remarks guys! I think the the 1944 US made covers were issued to replacesments in both Theaters of war? the guys over there had the 1942-43 covers in hand and the Brits supplied the GI's in Europe before D Day. oldabewla Posted December 9, 2013 Author Share #19 Posted December 9, 2013 Here is two interesting canteen covers!!! the early JEFF QMD 1942 is made in the same construction as the M1910 WWI covers were done with the seam up the full back which is a very hard cover to find! and this Mint 1943 Harian Cover is the only manuf. I know of? that they also made M1923 cartridge belts at the same time frame which I also have a mint 1943 Harian belt not shown here is a very interesting and very cool combo together from the same manuf. The M1941 dismount covers, I have yet to see in the 1944 & 1945 American made dates? but these can be found in the 1944 & 1945 British made covers thought. Gregory Posted December 11, 2013 Share #23 Posted December 11, 2013 Who bought a minute ago (on eBay) the 1945 British made canteen cover with ZERO stitching lines? Simply smooth cover without any stitching. Who?
JB4244 Posted December 11, 2013 Share #24 Posted December 11, 2013 Not me. What is the manufacturer ? Callaway Mills ?
Gregory Posted December 12, 2013 Share #25 Posted December 12, 2013 Seller wrote that manufacturer is unreadable and only "1945" stamping can be seen. The cover is British made so it cannot be Callaway.
