USS HAMUL (AD-20) was the lead ship of a class of two destroyer tenders acquired by the Navy for service in WWII.  She was designated as (AK-30) from 1940 to 1943, and then redesignated as a Destroyer Tender (AD-30) serving the Navy until 1962.

Laid down on 6 March 1940 as SS Sea Panther, a Maritime Commission type (C3 Cargo) hull under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 40) by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Company of Kearney, New Jersey. Launched in May 1940 she was delivered to the Lykes Brothers Steamship Company of New Orleans and renamed Doctor Lykes. After two trips to the Orient she was acquired by the United States Navy and commissioned as a cargo ship, USS Hamul (AK-30), on 14 June 1941 at Charleston, South Carolina, Commander F. M. Tillson in command.  Flagship of the Destroyer-Escort Shakedown Task Group in Bermuda. In the following 19 months she tended some 348 DD's as well as removing demolition charges from U-505. This German submarine was the first capture of a regular enemy warship on the high seas by the U.S. Navy since 1815.

Here is a USS Hunley AS 31 submarine tender, the first tender of its class built to service Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines,

This has the added ROV over SS  which I can only assume means Remotely Operated Vehicles

Another possibility

In USN repair parlance we use the abbreviation ROV on our paperwork which could mean

Repair of Other Vessels but I believe you're right about it being Remotely Operated Vehicle
