USS ATLAS (ARL-7) One of 39 Achelous class landing craft repair ships built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Atlas (in Greek mythology, the son of the Titan Iapetus and Clymene and the brother of Prometheus), She was originally laid down as LST-231 and commissioned as ARL-7 in 1943, serving at Normandy (D+2) repairing damaged landing craft in the European theater and then in the Pacific until 1946. This is her Korean War era patch when she was recommissioned between 1951 and 1956. She operated in Yokosuka, Japan & Okinawa repairing battle damaged ships in the Korean theater. She also served in Indochina (Vietnam) during the 'Passage to Freedom' sealift by the USN in 1954.
