M8 Pyrotechnic Pistol-- Issuance to Infantry

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

How common was the M8 Flare Pistol during WW2 in Infantry units? I know tanks had one and it could be fixed inside the turret to a tube to fire flares outside, but were these issued to Infantry units?

And how about the M9 Hand Projector?

Thanks,

JOhan

Hello Johan:

The Table of Equipment for the Infantry Rifle Platoon in 1945 included one Hand Pyrotechnic Projector, M9. While I am sure that the M8 pistol found its way to some infantry outfits, the T/E only shows the M9. The same is true for the Weapons Platoon, the Communications Platoon, the Ammunition and Pioneer Platoon, and Battalion Headquarters.

Hope that helps you.

Regards,

Charlie Flick

Airborne units had them. Dad even brought back a sack of flares. I have one double star and a fired parachute case both dated 1943. I also had one that had come apart and I save the projectiles. I think my brother has the others. They also used them to light up areas for night shooting.
