Easy to date this one, she was LSMR-536 until January 1969 when she was redesignated in-country as Inshore Fire Support ship LFR-536. Decommissioned againin 1955 until refitted in 1965 and stationed at Vung Tau, RVN where she served until 1971 earning 11 battle stars in Vietnam. After shakedown training out of San Pedro, California, Gallatin departed San Diego, California, 18 January 1945 with more than a thousand troops plus cargo. In the ensuing months she carried passengers and military cargo to ports throughout the Pacific Ocean, supporting the final blows which forced Japan to surrender. She visited Hawaii; the Marshall Islands; the New Hebrides; New Caledonia; the Philippines; New Guinea; and the Admiralty Islands. HALL (APD-107) with an error tab Crosley class High Speed Transport (ex-Rudderow class DE-597) The Versatile Gator aka the Iron Porpoise in service 1945 to 1965. This patch is from her 1961-1965 commissioning period when she was assigned to Cuban blockade duty in the Caribbean. She suffered a major breakdown in 1965 and her entire crew was cross-docked to her newly reactivated sister ship, USS KIRWIN (APD-90) ....and the ship which replaced her, USS KIRWIN (APD-90) ex-DE-229, later 'Amphibious Transport Small' LPR-90. Vernon County earned a Presidential Unit Citation (for her actions between 28 February 1969 to 25 March 1969), three Meritorious Unit Commendations, three Navy Unit Commendations, and 13 campaign stars for her Vietnam War service. USS CAYUGA COUNTY (LST-529) LST-491 class tank landing ship In service 1944 to 1963.
