On a recent uniform purchase. The mark is sewn on the cuff on the right sleeve.

Great find. I really like their rating badges, but the prices are pretty steep when they go for sale.

Does anybody have an approx value on these distinguishing marks?

I am an old C&GS CPO ....bottom two are both CPO sleeve insignia. I served from 64-68 as a Chief Quartermaster/Surveyor

rate badge was a ships wheel with a surveyor's rod superimposed on it

Seldom seen anywhere for sale or trade are the rating badges of the United States Coast & Geodetic Survey. Here is a page from the 1926 "Regulations Governing the Uniforms of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey." It so happens I have a number of USC&GS rates' illustrations in full colour showing variations of embroidery, these as I recall are mainly those rated as chief petty officers. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif Sarge Booker of Tujunga, California (hhbooker2@yahoo.com)

I am an old USC&GS CPO looking for bucket list items: USC&GS CPO hat & collar devices and a chief Quartermaster/

Surveyor Rate badge(ship's Wheel W/ Surveyor's rod superimposed on it) mthe surveyor's rod is the same as a SeeBee

I had these several years before I was able to identify the time period. These are the World War 1 period insignia for the standing collar. The U. S. device looks identical to the Army Officer's collar device but you can see that the attachment method is different. All three devices have a screw post with a distinctive nut for attaching. The nut has 'THE VICTORY PATENTED" stamped on it. I actually had the U. S. device in my World War 1 Army collection until I realized that the other two devices were from the World War 1 period and that the attachment devices were the same.

I was able to purchase the personal belongings of Rear Admiral Allen Larue Powell who retired after 37 years with the Coast & Geodetic Survey, ESSA and NOAA. He was transferred from the C&GS to serve with the Marine Corps during World War 2. The C&GS emblem is in a picture frame and is just beautiful. Admiral Powell was awarded the C&GS Atlantic War Zone ribbon for his service before joining the Marines, the WW2 Victory, Asiatic-Pacific and America Theater ribbons while in the Marines, and the Department of Commerce Gold Medal and Department of Commerce Silver Medal for service after the war.

Wonderful group to Admiral Powell, some seldom seen pieces of insignia.

Here's my contribution.  The CPO silver bullion Steward with gold bullion crescent mark was authorized 1944-1963 (US Navy) is made by Lion Bros. and appears to be WWII.  The crescent mark was replaced in 1963 by the mark with crossed quill pen and key on open ledger book on the other CPO silver bullion badge and was authorized until 1975 (again US Navy).  This badge has embroidered chevrons and appears to be on a poly / wool blend material.  Dennie

Just got this named USC&GS Jumper with the pants. Looks like he was an Oiler by the looks of rhe specialty mark. Got this for $25 total as it was marked as a WWII Navy uniform. I have never seen one of these in person and as soon as I saw the red mark I knew there was something special about it. Both the jumper and pants have colorful stitching throughout.

You are a lucky dog. It pays to recognize the other "sea services." While I have a number of USPHS rates, I have never found a USC&GS rate at a price I was willing to spend. Congrats on the find.

Thank you, I really appreciate that! I got very lucky searching outside of my normal parameters again. Starting bid was $9 and I out bid them and they never tried again. I paid more in shipping than for the item itself lol.

Oh yea no lol. I've only ever seen 1 other rating go for sale once and it went for almost $300. I'm lucky enough to have this and my single USPHS rate. If I never get another of either I'll still be happy I have atleast 1 of each service.

Good for you Pat! Let's face it, this obscure knowledge is useless in about 99% of our lives, so it's great to hear stories where it actually pays off! Thanks for posting,

Thanks! And yeaaaaa pretty much lol. I try to teach my junior sailors about navy rates and their history but they don't care. I'm glad it finally netted me something worthwhile for once lol. The crazy part about the uniform too is that the seller didn't have a picture of the ISC&GS triangle patch nor a close up of the rating. I just happened to see the red upside down MM mark and thought "hmmm, that looks like a USC&GS rating."

I always look for the "Crow on the Globe", i.e. the Eagle on the World

That's a good way to go too. That's a pretty obvious change from the regular USN and USCG rates. Hopefully we can all find some more soon.

Welcome back! You make me want to collect rates, but I don't have room for it all so uniforms it is. Those are amazing examples!

Yeah, i downsized a lot of my collection. Keep all my insignia and probably will just stick to insignia for American anyways.
