Backtheattack Posted November 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2013 Last weekend there was the "fortress day" at Torgau, a city at the Elbe River where in April 1945 American and Russian troops meet themselves. Torgau was from 1945 to 1989/1990 a town in the German Democratic Republic, so the Russian Monument is much greater than the 3 memorial stones which where build in the united Germany. View over Torgau to the Elbe River plan of the former fortress part of the wall, behind this the russian monument

gwb123 Posted November 7, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2013 Very interesting. I served in Germany during the Cold War in the 1980's. The only part of the German Democratic Republic that I got to see was East Berlin. Now, if I ever get the chance to return, I would like to see the historic sites of what had been the GDR. Backtheattack Posted November 7, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted November 7, 2013 Yes, there is so much to visit, for instance the Buchenwald Conzentration Camp, the Weapons Museum Suhl, Hometown Museum Calbe (west of Magdeburg), Test Area of the V2 rocket near Lehesten, the Kohnstein and much more. A lot of museums in private hand started after 1990. At Torgau there is no museum, they talked about a little one some kilometres north.
