Reading markings on uniforms better?

I've got a couple of uniforms with faded markings and names that have faded a bit over the years, is there any way to read these markings better? I tried with UV light, but it did not work so well on some of my items(I managed to tip over the lamp after a couple of minutes of usage, so I won't be able to try it again until I order a new one, silly me).
