Malas Posted November 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2013 I saw these three plates at a dealers table in Gettysburg I'm trying to figure out if there real or fake. I'm doing a restoration on an 1875 Shako that's missing the plate and don't want to put a repro on it. Any advise would be appreciated.

Brig Posted November 3, 2013 Share #5 Posted November 3, 2013 First one looks pretty good. The other two shields appear to have Bannermans emblems on them
Malas Posted November 3, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted November 3, 2013 Thanks for your help, just for the future so I can pick out the fakes how do you tell its a Bannermans emblem is it the wire instead of the loops?
Brig Posted November 3, 2013 Share #7 Posted November 3, 2013 single wire, thinner stamped construction, and the tell-tale sign is the extra strand of metal running from the bottom anchor fluke to the globe Would love to see this shako you're restoring

Brig Posted November 6, 2013 Share #10 Posted November 6, 2013 Where did you stumble upon that? Buttons original USMC?
Malas Posted November 7, 2013 Author Share #11 Posted November 7, 2013 I won it at the Cowins auction last weekend. It was labeled as an 1872 but I believe the body is an 1875 do you agree? Yes the buttons are USMC. now I'm looking for a Pom Pom and plate. I have a plate but I would like to get one that has paint on it.
Brig Posted November 7, 2013 Share #12 Posted November 7, 2013 I'd go with the standard plate, the painted I believe were more ceremonial in nature. Pom-pom is going to be the difficult task
Malas Posted November 16, 2013 Author Share #13 Posted November 16, 2013 its finally finished and here is what it looks like not sure if the Pom Pom is real or a fake but for now it will have to do.
Brig Posted November 17, 2013 Share #14 Posted November 17, 2013 Pom-pom looks very minty, I'd guess it was a reproduction. Glad to see you picked up the plate...looking good!
Malas Posted November 17, 2013 Author Share #15 Posted November 17, 2013 It looks better than it is its got some wear on the Pom Pom itself and there is wear on the bottom of the brass that mates with the shako. In any case I'm glad to get it. What do you think something like this is worth?
Brig Posted November 17, 2013 Share #16 Posted November 17, 2013 Would depend on the buyer...they don't pop up that often, so not much to compare it to
