Navy Dan Posted November 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2013 Hi Everyone, Not sure if this is where i should post this but here it is. I just picked this up. It is one frame glass on both sides The upper photo is a photo of a painting done by Charles W. Furlong the right one is of greek divers on the wreck of USS Philadelphia 1904 The other photo is a map of Tripoli drawn by Furlong. Then there is a piece of wood from the hull of the USS Philadelphia. The back is a description of the sinking of the USS Philadelphia. With a dedication and signature of Charles W Furlong. Furlong was quite the adventurer and artist if you look him up on google. This looks to be professionally framed and old. Not 100% sure what I have so any opinions or help is appreciated. Thanks Dan

Grant S. Posted November 3, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 3, 2013 I would think an actual piece of the Philadelphia would be pretty valuable. The display looks authentic, but I think more proof is required before the piece can be accepted as authentic. The burning of the Philadelphia was a defining moment for the young U.S. Navy, something Nelson described as "The most daring act of the age" or words to that effect. IMHO it should join the other relics at the Naval Academy.
