ColdWarRules Posted November 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2013 Does anyone know of any books (mainly looking for memoirs or following a unit) that fought on Okinawa, for Aachen, and in the Normandy campaign? I'd like to read more personal accounts, rather than statistical and general overview. Thanks! -Nick
jkash23686 Posted November 2, 2013 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2013 Okinawa the Last Battle by Robert Leckie http://www.amazon.com/Okinawa-The-Last-Battle-World/dp/0140173897 Its one of his most thin books and a quick reed but not horrible. -j
jkash23686 Posted November 2, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 2, 2013 There are also a bunch of great paratrooper books that dont specifically just cover Normandy but specific units campaigns though the war:Parachute Infantry by David Webster - I like this because it was published before BoB so there are no "even though it said this in the series this is what happened" moments. Jump Into the Valley of Shaddow- By Dwayne T Burns Story of 508th trooper.
kjones5452 Posted November 2, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 2, 2013 Take a trip to a good used book store and see if they still might have some of the old Ballantine, Dell and a few other publishers paperbacks from the 50s,60s,and 70s. Stuff that was written while it was still fresh on the mind. I've still got most of the one's I read and you'd be hardpressed to find better first person accounts.
